Niwetsika

Niwetsika is a space where we try to cultivate, regenerate and care for the land within our capacities and responsibilities.

Niwetsika is the name given to the Maize Mother Woman in Mexican Wixarika mythology. She had 5 daughters who represented various types of corn, their growth phases, and at the same time beans, squash, and huaute-amaranth.

We have taken the name of that mother for its valuable meaning and for what her daughters represent. As we are not part of the history of Ecuador or of any of the people in our work team, we ask the people of Wixarika for permission to use their name.  so that her name helps us to represent the idea of Mother that we want to give to our garden as well as take her daughters as a symbol of diversity and cogeneration. We wish from the bottom of our hearts that his name gives strength to our plants and provides diversity in our garden thanks to all the living beings that are added.

Our main objective with this orchard is not to sow to generate wealth with the plants that germinate in it, but rather we want to raise awareness among our visitors and consumers by introducing the Harvest with your hands methodology, because we see that harvesting It generates a different feeling when just going shopping for food.

On the other hand, the space that we have today does not belong to us, but we have been granted the facilities so that we can apply our knowledge in it. Without a doubt, during the time that we share the land, we will try to learn as much as possible so that in the not too distant future we can apply it in our own space.

FOR NOW WE ARE IN THE LEARNING PROCESS. OUR ORCHARD IS GROWING AND WE STILL DO NOT HAVE PRODUCTS TO OFFER.

THANKS FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING.

On the other hand, in addition to the idea that people can harvest what they consume on their own, we have decided to create a space where seeds can be shared, exchanged and donated without trying to obtain economic benefits in any of the cases.

Seeds as part of human history somehow became our companions for thousands of years. Since man decided to change from a nomadic life to a sedentary life, seeds have given us the possibility of staying for longer periods of time in one place or even being able to move plants that we liked to places far from their original origin.

Thanks to our interactions with nature, we have been able to domesticate a number of plants, including jointly gestating varieties that have helped us in this advance in time and space. Here at Niwetsika we have realized such importance, thanks to the fact that each person can surround himself with the diversity that he or she wants to enjoy and without a doubt can consume organic food without any type of chemical.

Niwetika as such has seen it necessary and as a first step to return to the origin of all food, the seeds. But in pursuit of this goal we have been concerned to observe how large multinationals and other local companies have been taking over what is on our plates and especially our seeds. Creating organizations and companies that do not seek a common good but rather a particular one, showing us a totally wrong side of agriculture as well as of food, which do nothing more than make us vulnerable to diseases and little by little deteriorate our lives, that of plants and others are alive.

In this way the idea of a Seed Repository was born. A place where it will be possible to promote the use of native seeds and give space to people who want to exchange and save them, but at the same time have the possibility of sharing experiences and knowledge in the use and treatment of them.
